Mischa Barton’s Malice in Sunderland, a reinvention of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland from director Simon Fellows, has switched locations due to a £250,000 shortfall in funds, reports the BBC. The film will now shoot in Southend, with producer Albert Martinez-Martin revealing: “There is no problem with Sunderland at all, the reasons being we have been looking at locations which are offering help in terms of funding. “There is about £250,000 which we have lined up from Screen East in Southend and we are looking at locations there right now.” Producer Martinez-Martin added that the film has changed its name to Malice in Wonderland to appeal to a worldwide audience. “Everyone in the UK would know Sunderland but outside the UK they wouldn’t. I also thought two puns in one title were one too many.” Barton, known for playing Marissa Cooper in The OC, will star as a student who wakes up in a strange city after being hit by a taxi. Tom Harvey, chief executive of Northern Film and Media, said he was “very sad” that the movie wouldn’t film on Wearside. “We have over £1 million to spend but that goes on local people. In this region talent that lives and works here is more important than production companies coming in,” Harvey said.

Mischa Barton’s upcoming film Malice in Sunderland (UK) / Malice in Wonderland (US) was schedule to begin filming soon in Wearside and Sunderland in the UK, but due to a funding shortfall, it will now be filmed in another England location: Southend. According to the BBC, Future Films was seeking a location that would offer help in terms of funding, and Screen East in Southend has offered up £250,000 for the film, while the terms in the North East were to hire local talent in exchange for funding. Shooting for the film is set to begin in May or June.
In terms of Mischa Barton’s role in the film, we now have more details. Mischa Barton will play a US law student, Alice, who gets hit by a black taxi and finds herself with amnesia in the strange city. Albert Martinez-Marton of Future Films says:
“She’s dragged through an underworld filled with twisted individuals and low-lifes by cab driver Whitey (the white rabbit). “She needs to find out who she is, where she’s from and use what wits she has left to get back home in one piece.”

We looked into Mischa Barton’s current film, ‘Walled In’, recently. She’s still in Saskatchewan filming it. Fangoria had an interview with Karim Hussain, who is the cinematographer for the movie.
It’s a great insight into Mischa Barton’s character in the movie. Thus far, we’ve only had surface insight based on the plot of the movie. But I am intrigued by her “journey into her past” – that could call for some great acting!
Here are some relevant excerpts from the interview:
“It’s a movie that is contrary to how people usually see me; it’s directed by a French filmmaker named Gilles Paquet-Brenner, in his English-language debut,” Hussain tells Fango… Starring Mischa (THE SIXTH SENSE) Barton, Deborah Kara Unger from David Cronenberg’s CRASH and Cameron (GODSEND) Bright, WALLED IN is “a horror movie about a mad architect and a girl [Barton] who basically ends up in his building where very dodgy, twisted things happened during its construction,” Hussain explain. “It’s really this young woman’s journey into her past as she encounters this insane architect in this building. For me it’s great, because I’m working very closely with the director on not only the visuals but also the film’s content, and there has been a lot of great creative collaboration.” … read more »
Mischa Barton is set to star in yet another movie! She will star in the 2008 thriller “Homecoming” – and will be the ‘bad girl’ of the flick!
A girl never forgets her first love…
“Homecoming” will be directed by Morgan J. Freeman. He’s probably best known for Dawson’s Creek, but also for a few horror flicks and other movies.
“Homecoming” is co-written by Katie Fetting and Frank Hannah.
The movie is a scary thriller along the lines of Misery. In it, Mischa takes her ex boyfriend’s new girlfriend hostage. But, according to Freeman, he’ll ground the story in reality so that the movie “truly terrifies.” Sounds like Mischa can truly stretch and show her chops as a bad girl in this one.
The movie begins filming on December 10 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and will run into late January.
